Jim Irvin, Owner

Jim has always been a self-described “Nature Boy” who has spent his entire life in Florida. As a youngster, when other kids were out playing sandlot baseball, Jim was off in the woods of West Palm Beach catching insects for his collection and seeking out wild orchids for his backyard greenhouse. At the age of 11, Jim obtained his first job, working at a large local orchid nursery. His lifelong interest in insects and plants carried through to college, where he majored in Entomology and minored in Horticulture. Jim received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Entomology and graduated at the “Top of his Class” from the University of Florida in 1978.

He moved to Fort Myers after graduation and was employed as a Turf Specialist for a large lawn-spraying company. He later moved on to accept employment with a garden city chain in Lee County where he served as manager for their new Cape Coral location. While there, Jim began to build a small pest control company by knocking on doors on the weekends. After building it up to over 100 customers, he invited a former college roommate to join him in a partnership to make it a full-time venture. In 1980, Irvin Pest Control Inc. was born.

Two years later, Jim bought out his partner. It was during that timeframe that Jim hired his first full-time Secretary, Ruth, who became his beloved wife in 1986. To this day, Ruth Irvin serves as General Manager of Irvin Pest Control and oversees 14 employees as well as the day to day office operations.

Jim currently serves as the company’s “Stinging Insect Specialist” and remains on call for feral honeybee and yellow jacket infestations. Jim was among the first to encounter Africanized honeybees in Lee County, dealing with several confirmed cases in 2005. Since then, he has removed and eliminated many hundreds of colonies of feral infestations in the local area, and has an extensive photo archive to illustrate those “assignments.”
When not dealing with venomous insects, Jim enjoys growing and breeding a large collection of orchids, bromeliads and many other tropical plants. He has produced and registered well over 100 plant hybrids that are now grown the world over!

Jim’s academic training and field experience are apparent in the high level of expertise and knowledge of the company’s service staff, who demonstrate a high level of competency while providing service to Irvin Pest Control’s “Family of Customers.” Jim remains ready to personally step in and lend a hand whenever an especially difficult or unusual pest situation comes along.

Ruth Irvin, General Manager

Originally from Kentucky where she was raised as a “Farm Girl,” Ruth relocated to Cape Coral in 1976.

In 1982, Ruth accepted the position of Secretary with a fledgling startup — Irvin Pest Control. Ruth not only grew with the company, she began to grow the company herself. She absorbed extensive knowledge with regard to pests, plants and business from her “mentor,” Jim Irvin.

It was soon apparent that this was not only a perfect business match but it also became a love match that resulted in Ruth and Jim being married in 1986.

Through all Ruth’s years of dedication and study, she has become a highly knowledgeable key employee who is integral to the success of Irvin Pest Control. She is capable of performing any job in the company at a moment’s notice. Ruth has distinguished herself as a tireless worker and a detail person who places high importance in making sure the job is done correctly, each and every time. Most of her time on the job is spent interacting with the Irvin Pest Control “Family of Customers,” something she has always enjoyed.

When Ruth’s not working, she enjoys Team Tennis and being a “Purrfect” Cat Mom!
